PARTICIPANT WP 2 / 3

Oriane Ploquin

Oriane Ploquin is a PhD student on the HUMANI project at CIRAD since January 2022. She is an ecologist and an epidemiologist with extensive experience in applying a functional approach to the study of large herbivore ecology.

She has a Master degree from the University of Rennes 1 (France). She completed her MSc thesis within the laboratory of functional ecology of the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) investigating the chemical aspects of the black rhinos’ foraging decisions.

Oriane developed a strong interest in the community approach to address the main challenges of understanding the functioning of socio-ecosystems, in particular the interface to savannah protected areas.

During her PhD, Oriane will investigate the role of biodiversity in the emergence of Foot-and-Mouth disease at the interface between protected areas and communal lands.

Conservation, climate change and sustainable development are also central to her interests. She is keen to place communication at the heart of her work as a scientist and is interested in all forms of scientific popularization.

What is your role/relationship in the project?

  • I will be involved in WP2 and 3

What are your expectations?

  • Develop a new framework for implication of large herbivores communities in the eco-epidemiology studies
  • To contribute to the smooth running of the project by providing my own expertise
  • Participate, directly or indirectly, in all aspects of the project to learn from the diversity of the profiles involved

What excites you about the project?

  • A multi-disciplinary approach to a complex current problem within the « One health » dynamic
  • A strong cooperation with local actors
  • Consideration of the challenges related to a study on sociology, biodiversity and epidemiology in the Southern Hemisphere
